MariData Project – Improving Ship Energy Efficiency

The MariData project provides important contributions to improving the energy efficiency of ship operations and reducing emissions

Energy efficiency has always been a key concern for shipbuilding and shipping. Whereas economic reasons dominated the motivation to search for a low power requirement for ships in the past, ecological reasons and compliance with legal regulations to reduce emissions become increasingly important today. These demand a consistent strategy of energy efficiency as well as a significant reduction of exhaust emissions, not only during ship design and construction, but also during ship operation.

MariData GeoPlatform and Routing – Project kickoff

Reducing the energy demand of ships

52°North was pleased to join the virtual MariData kickoff meeting on December 17, 2020. The project’s aim is to reduce the energy demand and hence fuel consumption of cargo ships. To achieve this, MariData will model and analyse a ship’s energy demand based on the environmental and physical conditions. These models will be incorporated into a routing to deliver goods on time along the path with the smallest energy demand.

We look forward to developing comprehensive technologies for energy efficient machine learning based (ML-based) routing alternatives. As of now, we have initiated the MariData GeoPlatform’s requirements analysis and collated modelling approaches. First concepts and options are already under evaluation for their suitability.

This project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

Improving the Earth System with Artificial Intelligence

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze presents grant for KISTE : AI Strategy for Earth System Data

During a virtual meeting with Mr. Markus Lewe (mayor of Münster), Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze presented the grant funding for the research project KISTE – AI STrategy for Earth system data to members of the project consortium. KISTE’s goal is to use artificial intelligence (AI) to help analyze, prepare and publicize data about the condition of nature and environment. A particular focus is on the use of machine learning. PhD students will explore and implement current AI approaches to spatio-temporal variable pattern recognition and pattern analysis in environmental data. They will focus on five thematic fields: clouds, snow/ice, water, air quality and vegetation. The resulting methods and concepts will be incorporated in an environmental AI platform. An integrated e-learning platform will provide teaching materials to educate young scientists and disseminate the acquired knowledge. This will foster the use of AI in the field of geosciences and bridges the gap between AI and domain expertise.
