The senseBox:bike is an open-source sensor technology that collects environmental and traffic-related data while traveling. Using an innovative, AI-based approach, dangerous passing manoeuvres by cars, road conditions, particulate matter and temperature are measured on the move. Join the workshop and you can assemble the technology, try it out and discuss how this data can contribute to improving the safety of cyclists and the cycling infrastructure. How to Apply Sensor Web Technologies to Provide INSPIRE-compliant Download Services for Observation Data

The importance of sensors for measuring the environment has notably increased in the past few years. This results in a diversity of available data formats and interfaces. Corresponding standards, such as the OGC Sensor Web Enablement specifications, are necessary to enable simple and interoperable access to measurement data.

The INSPIRE Directive aims to simplify the exchange of geospatial data within Europe. Whereas the exchange of conventional geodata, such as maps and vector data, is well established in the INSPIRE framework, new approaches for sharing observation data have been developed more recently. This is particularly relevant for additional data topics specified in Annex II and III that may cover different types of observation data.

The “INSPIRE Technical Guidelines for Download Services” describe how to set up INSPIRE download services for different types geospatial data. This webinar will introduce two elements of the INSPIRE Technical Guidelines which cover aspects of observation data: the “Guidelines for the use of Observations & Measurements and Sensor Web Enablement-related standards in INSPIRE” and the “Technical Guidance for implementing download services using the OGC Sensor Observation Service and ISO 19143 Filter Encoding”.

Alexander Kotsev (JRC), Sylvain Grellet and Mickael Beaufils (BGRM) and Simon Jirka (52°North) discuss how to publish observation data via the SOS within the context of INSPIRE.

About Copernicus and ILWIS4

Copernicus is a large earth observation programme run by the European Commission and the European Space Agency. Its Sentinel satellites provide openly accessible satellite image data. This data can now be used in the latest version of ILWIS. ILWIS4 is an open source earth observation and GIS software package. It supports import, export, editing, analysis and visualization of geodata.

What to expect in this webinar:

  • How to download and pre-process satellite image data with the Sentinel Application Platform.
  • A short introduction to the ILWIS4 software.
  • A step-by-step guide of how to display Sentinel-2 data and a demonstration of simple raster operations.

Use cases

We have prepared two use cases in which we will use Sentinel-2 sensor data to calculate radiometric indices. In our first use case we calculate the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in order to monitor an agricultural area in Southern Spain. In the second use case we will calculate the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI2) to detect water and analyze changes over time.

Last but not least you’ll get a peek at the option to create workflows out of single operations.

After the demo we will be happy to answer your questions. Tutorial materials will be provided after the webinar so that you can try the presented software components yourself.

About

Event-based architectures are increasingly used in various mainstream IT applications including the financial sector or large scale IoT applications. However, the geospatial domain, especially spatial data infrastructures, often relies on the traditional Web Service pattern (request/response pattern). This full day workshop aims to discuss the potential of event-based architectures in geospatial applications (e.g. disaster management, environmental monitoring, or public security) and to set up a corresponding research agenda. The morning session comprises invited expert talks on event-based technologies and applications. In the afternoon, the challenges for event-processing and event-driven architectures will be identified and discussed in break-out groups. In a final session, the results will be collected and discussed to serve as input for a joint report on the current state of event-based approaches for geospatial information provision and processing.

Objectives

  • Gather an overview on event-based approaches for providing and processing geospatial information
  • Identify relevant application domains and use cases
  • Identify patterns for eventing in spatial data infrastructures and architectures
  • Identify and discuss current research topics
