RIESGOS Annual Meeting in Oberpfaffenhofen
October 17 – 18, 2023, the RIESGOS 2.0 team met at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen (near Munich) for the annual project meeting. On the first day, consortium members gave a series of short presentations on the main progress made in their work packages over the past year. Together with colleagues from the DLR and the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), 52°North gave an update on the progress made in the implementation and integration of web services and data. The most important points were the integration of the existing RIESGOS web services into a new, event-driven software architecture and a simplified deployment setup. This should make it easier for the partners in South America to use the software components.
The second day was dedicated to planning and preparing the upcoming final project trip to Chile and Peru in November 2023. Since RIESGOS 2.0 runs until February 2024, it is in its final phase.
RIESGOS 2.0 Kick-off
Natural hazards and chain reactions – assessing risks more accurately
Increasing numbers of people worldwide are being exposed to natural hazards, particularly in densely populated cities and conurbations. In these situations, effective risk management can save lives. Hazards are rarely isolated; if an earthquake triggers a tsunami, this in turn can generate further environmental disasters and disruptions. Torrential rain can cause landslides and lead to rivers bursting their banks, resulting in flooding. These chain reactions can compound a disaster and quickly overwhelm victims and rescue workers. Information systems can help planners and emergency services to pre-emptively draw up multi-risk scenarios and to take targeted precautions. For this reason, the RIESGOS 2.0 international project kicked off on 1 March 2021. Under the leadership of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), the project partners are developing scientific methods and technologies for multi-risk analysis.
RIESGOS Workshops in South America
Discussing state of the art of research and information systems in Chile, Peru and Ecuador
52°North’s Christoph Stasch participated in a series of workshops for RIESGOS project members and local stakeholders in South America in April 2018. These workshops lay the groundwork for creating a Multi-Risk Information and Early Warning System for the Andes region. more >
