The Weather Routing Tool (WRT) is an open-source Python library developed by 52°North for calculating optimal maritime routes. Its development began under the MariData project (funded by BMWE) and is currently continuing as part of the EU TwinShip project. WRT’s primary objective is to minimize fuel consumption in the shipping industry by using environmental data to help route vessels. This data includes various meteorological parameters, such as wind and wave conditions, as well as water depth information.
52°North Welcomes Uni Twente Master Students
52°North recently opened its doors to a group of 12 international students and two staff from the University of Twente, The Netherlands. The students are involved in a two year program, in which they learn to address large-scale and complex societal challenges by combining both technical and socio-economic knowledge with a strong basis of spatial data analysis and modelling. At the end of their first year, they complete a study tour throughout Europe, visiting institutes, universities and companies active in Spatial Information Science, Technical Engineering and Spatial Planning & Governance.
IMDC 2024
International Marine Design Conference
The IMDC 2024 takes place June 2 – 6, 2024 in Delft, The Netherlands. The conference aims to promote all aspects of marine design as an engineering discipline. This year’s focus is on the key design challenges and opportunities in the maritime field. Members of the MariData consortium describe how they are designing a digital twin to optimize vessel operation.
