Demonstrating Deployment and Execution of Earth Observation Exploitation Platforms

The Open Geospatial Consortium’s (OGC) Earth Observation Exploitation Platform Hackathon recently took place at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt. 52°North’s Benjamin Pross participated in the testing of various client and service implementations.

A new concept for reusing results of the completed Testbeds, the hackathon also helps to kickstart subsequent Testbed initiatives. This hackathon provided an opportunity to “experiment with the latest results from Testbed-13 in the context of ESA’s Earth Observation (EO) Exploitation Platforms” (http://www.opengeospatial.org/projects/initiatives/eocloudhack#HackathonIntroduction). The Earth Observation Exploitation Platforms are a concept to help society use Earth Observation data, which is produced in vast amounts on a daily basis. Standardized OGC services and clients guarentee a certain level of interoperability between implementations from different vendors, hiding the complexity from users.

During the Hackathon, participants tested and evaluated how various client and service implementations worked together, demonstrating that the Testbed-13 results are fit for purpose. Benjamin Pross mentioned that it was a nice (short) effort and he is looking forward to the next Hackathon.
