New Projects Launched: Digital Twins as a Tool for Climate-Resilient Urban Planning
Urban Digital Twins intend to integrate climate adaptation into urban planning faster, more precisely, and more effectively in the future. BMFTR launches a number of projects, in which science, municipalities, and companies develop new digital planning tools.
The Federal Ministry of Education, Research and Space (BMFTR) is funding seven new projects and a supporting research and coordination project (~ € 23M) to develop Urban Digital Twins (UDT) for climate-resilient urban planning. Projects use real-world laboratories to create specialized applications, so-called specialist twins. These simulate the effects and analysis of climate adaptation measures for heat, heavy rain and prolonged periods of drought in a resource-saving manner, and proactively.
Municipalities, science and industry met at the recent kick-off event in Speyer, Germany. The 70 participants networked and presented their projects. As partners in the supporting research and coordination project LinkUDT, 52°North and TU Dresden hosted a discussion table to evaluate requirements related to data and interfaces. The Data and Interfaces working group deals with the relevant challenges of data integration and the implementation of standardized interfaces. The discussions covered data sovereignty, the connection to existing infrastructures and the needs of the real-world laboratories for the supporting project (LinkUDT) .
