52°North is pleased to announce the winners of the 52°North Student Innovation Prize for Geoinformatics 2011! This year’s jury has decided to award the following prizes:

  • First Prize: Tobias Kohr of the University of Technology Dresden for his paper “Development of a service-based Geoportal enabling the Mapping of Whale Watching”
  • Second Prize: Marcell Roth from the Insitute for Geoinformatics at the University of Muenster for his paper “Geographic Feature Pipes”.

First Prize is endowed with 1.500 EUR, plus reimbursement of expenses for presenting a paper at a Geoinformatics conference in 2011/2012 (travel, accommodation, fees) up to 1.000 EUR. Second Prize reimburses expenses for presenting a paper at a Geoinformatics conference in 2011/2012 (travel, accommodation, fees) up to 500 EUR.


The SWSL group at ifgi announces a call for submissions about unpublished research on the crossroad of Sensor Web and Geoprocessing for the Integrating Sensor-Web and Web-based Geoprocessing book (ISW book). This open call is a follow up from the successful ISW workshop, held at the AGILE 2011 conference in Utrecht, the Netherlands. In particular, the ISW book aims to present research on the following topics:

  • (Event-based) processing of sensor data streams
  • Uncertainty in Geoprocessing workflows and sensor data streams
  • Distributed Geoprocessing workflows
  • Sensors, Geoprocessing and Cloud Computing
  • Self-describing sensors and processes
  • Concepts for integrating sensors and processing
  • Linked data approaches for sensors and processes
  • Applications for processing sensor data.

The deadline for manuscript submission is July 15, 2011.

52°North recently participated in ESRI 2011 - "One World. Many solutions.", held May 24 - 26, 2011 in Munchen-Unterschleißheim. More than 1,200 participants attended a number of workshops, expert panels and topic-related forums in which the current state of GIS technology and GIS solutions was discussed. Highlights included the rapid development of the web, as well as mobile and cloud computing. 52°North presented its vision of cloud computing as a means of dealing with SDI's continuing performance and availability challenges.


The deadline for submissions for the 52°North Student Innovation Prize is approaching fast! Submissions are due by May 27, 2011.
