Introducing different normalization functions for indicator processing scripts as part of the pygeoapi
For more than a year, the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis has strategically integrated KomMonitor into its social and health planning efforts. A key component of this work is the creation of detailed neighborhood profiles, which use small-scale data to provide valuable insights into the social environments where residents live.
A key strategic approach focuses on neighborhoods identified by above-average social or health indicators across multiple factors. In these areas, the goal is to improve living conditions and enhance development opportunities, particularly for children and adolescents. The “Need for Attention” index is the statistical tool used to measure the combined social and health action needs within a neighborhood. This index is calculated from several basic indicators covering topics such as poverty, demographics, and health.

To enable the regular, automated calculation of the leading indicator “Need for Attention”, 52°North integrated the new KomMonitor Processes API into the existing KomMonitor instance. This API uses the open-source frameworks pygeoapi and prefect. We then implemented a process that allows for the automated calculation of leading indicators. As a result, Rhein-Sieg-Kreis now has enhanced functionalities for automatically processing existing spatio-temporal data within KomMonitor, enabling the derivation of additional social indicators in the future.
