Collection, Maintenance, and Provision of Forest Road Information
A Trails-powered platform for the management of forest road data and forest fire response information
For many years, NavLog GmbH has successfully created and maintained a Germany-wide, routable forest road network with corresponding connection points to the public road network. Founded and supported by forestry and timber associations, NavLog GmbH lays the foundation for modern, innovative forestry and timber logistics and neighbouring sectors. The project, in which 52°North acts a subcontractor for con terra, involves converting the previous NavLog solution to a new, proven, and innovative technological foundation, using Open Pioneer Trails as the basic framework for developing the maintenance client.
The system architecture is built on several core components: a web application for the user interface, GeoServer for geospatial data management, PostGIS for data persistence, Keycloak for identity and access management, and FME for data processing and validation. The GeoServer configuration is automated via its REST API to streamline deployment and updates. The system manages two primary categories of data: forest road networks and forest fire response. The application offers comprehensive functionality, supporting the full lifecycle management (creation, update, and deletion) of forest roads and related data, as well as the provision of this information for viewing. User access is controlled by a role-based system that ensures appropriate permissions are assigned for viewing or editing capabilities. The application has been operational since June, with the team providing regular, iterative updates.
