52°North Newsletter ------ Issue 3/2007, December 20, 2007

2007 in retrospect

52°North looks back on an eventful first year as a company. We facilitated the maturation of two new communities, ILWIS and Geo-processing, thus increasing our number of full-fledged communities, developers and software releases. In addition, the Security community broadened its focus to incorporate and implement new concepts in geo-rights management. Our partners continue to prove their expertise by actively participating in the OGC standardization process and by producing innovative code based on current standards.

We look forward to exploring horizons in 2008!

----------------------------------------------

today's topics:
1 - INTERGEO 2007
2 - FOSS4G 2007
3 - OGC compliant WPS
4 - Participation in OWS-5

----------------------------------------------

1 - INTERGEO 2007

52°North is pleased to report an overall positive resonance to this year's INTERGEO. We again welcomed a broad spectrum of visitors from various branches of the GI market in and outside of Germany at our booth in the Open Source Park.

One of this year's new hot topics was licensing and geo-rights management. 52°North experts demonstrated how to implement dynamic management of usage rights and access rights for OGC Services. Another hot topic was our sensor web services for integrating sensors, sensor data and sensor systems into Spatial Data Infrastructures. We were able to demonstrate a broad spectrum of sensor web technologies and document their use in a number of projects. We also introduced the generic GIS/RS package ILWIS 3.4 Open, which just became open source as of July.

2 - FOSS4G 2007

This year's FOSS4G2007 was hosted in Victoria, Canada in September. Developers and users of open source geo-spatial software from around the world came together to discuss new directions, exciting implementations and growing business opportunities in the field of open source geo-spatial software. Members of each of 52°North's communities presented current developments ranging from OGC Sensor Web Enablement, 52N Security and Geo-Rights Management, 52N Web Processing Services, to ILWIS 3.4 Open.

3 - OGC compliant WPS

52°North's Web Processing Service is now compliant to OGC's WPS 1.0.0 (OGC document 05-007r7). This new release includes the WPS server, the uDig client plug-in and the JUMP client plug-in.

4 - Participation in OWS 5

The OGC Web Service Interoperability initiative testbed activity phase 5 (OWS-5 http://www.opengeospatial.org/projects/initiatives/ows-5) was initiated to advance standards for geospatial workflow, sensor webs, geospatial digital rights management, GML information communities, and KML. 52°North partners are actively developing and testing software interoperability to further the OGC Specifications in two of the five threads: Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) and Geo Processing Workflow (GPW). In addition, the 52N Sensor Observation Service (SOS) and the 52N Sensor Planning Service (SPS) are undergoing Compliance Testing (CITE), i.e. testing to verify that the services are compliant with the OGC specifications and thus interoperable. OWS-5 results are expected in February, 2008.
