52°North welcomes four students for this year’s Google Summer of Code^TM! Google Summer of Code^TM is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. Stipend recipients receive $ 5.000,- for three months of software development. The student developers were chosen from thirty-five 52°North project applicants from around the world. As a first-time Google Summer of Code^TM mentoring organization, 52°North looks forward to mentoring a record four projects!

The ILWIS community is pleased to announce the release of ILWIS 3.8. This new ILWIS version represents a major upgrade from ILWIS 3.7. A comprehensive update of the graphics system has resulted in an extensive system of options for managing visualization and tuning it for visual analysis. In terms of functionality and ease of use, animations and 3D visualization have achieved similar usability to the regular 2D visualizations.

The Earth Observation Community announces new software for ILWIS – The AMSDEC-SADC Toolbox. This toolbox enables users to handle and process data gained from services developed within the AMESD SADC Thematic Action. The AMESD SADC-Thematic Action aims to empower SADC and its member states to sustainably manage their agricultural and environmental resources. It currently develops three information services to address decision needs for the South African Development Community (SADC) region:

• Agricultural Service: monitors the state of the crops and rangeland.
• Drought Service: monitors drought during the whole year and provides drought outlooks.
• Fire Service: provides a daily fire risk indication, detection and follow-up of active fires (in real time) and burnt area assessments during the fire season.

The Geoprocessing Community announces a new major Web Processing Service release. The 52°North WPS 3.0 includes the WPS Client API 3.0 and introduces a new WPS Process Development Kit for the 3.0 Version. Large scale improvements in stability and performance make this WPS more comfortable to use. "R" users can now dynamically upload and expose R scripts as WPS processes. R is a language and environment for statistical computing. A common set of classes and methods for spatial data in R have lead to the development of a set of 70+ add-on packages for spatial statistical analysis in R.

52°North announces a call for participation in and presentations at the "Workshop on GIScience in the Big Data Age 2012" which will be held in conjunction with the seventh International Conference on Geographic Information Science 2012 (GIScience 2012) in Columbus, Ohio, USA. The full day workshop will take place on September 18th, 2012 and will focus on intensive discussions setting a roadmap towards publishing, structuring, retrieving, and consuming Linked Spatiotemporal Data and understanding how GIScience can contribute to the vision of a data-intensive science. 52°North will sponsor a GIBDA data challenge, awarding the winner $250,- for innovativeness and potential impact.
