Markus Bärlocher, initiator of the worldwide open source project "The OpenSeaMap Project", visits 52°North and the Institute for Geoinformatics. He will give a talk on The OpenSeaMap Project, a sub project of OpenStreetMap. 52°North will use this opportunity to discuss ideas and concepts about enhancing the capabilities of OpenSeaMap with near real-time sensor data and WebOfThings concepts and to initiate tangible activities.

52°North research associates Simon Jirka and Daniel Nüst recently held a workshop on Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Sensor Web Enablement Initiative (SWE) Technologies. The two day event took place as part of the Smart Cities Expo and was held at the Catalan Institute of Cartography in Barcelona. Attendees were introduced to a variety of software projects and OGC specifications and gained valuable hands-on experience with the 52°North SOS implementation.

52°North's Daniel Nüst recently presented generic WPS application patterns for scientific exploitation of earth observation data at the ESA-ESRIN Models for scientific exploitation of EO Data workshop in Frascati, Italy. The workshop outlined the new trends and models for closing the gap between missions, data and Earth System challenges.

Early this year, 52°North updated its Bylaws to consider some developments in its policies and procedures and to improve the text in terms of readability and clearness. The most important change was the new licensing policy, which paved the way for using Open Source Initiative approved non-copyleft licenses rather than the strict General Public License (GPL), which has been the 52°North standard Open Source license type to date.
