WSC.Desktop 0.9 includes support for Shibboleth protected services

The Security & GeoRM Community announces the release of the 52N WSC.Desktop Version 0.9. This Java desktop application enables the integration of protected services in local GIS applications. Version 0.9 users can access WSS, WAS and Shibboleth protected services. The limited subset of the SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) 2.0 ECP Profile implemented resulted from participation in the OGC Interoperability Shibboleth Experiment.

Focus on Sensor Interface Descriptors (SID) @ PESOS workshop

Sensor Web Community member Arne Bröring presented 52°North’s current Sensor Interface Descriptor (SID) developments to a group of technology manufacturers and vendors, as well as marine researchers at the 2nd PESOS Workshop in Hamburg last week. The participants gathered to discuss how to reasonably combine SIDs with other interface standards such as IEEE 1451 and the emerging PUCK protocol to achieve plug & play marine sensors.

Geoinformatik Students receive the 52°North Innovation Prize

The development of innovative and pioneering concepts for geotechnologies and the practical realization of these concepts is a corner stone of the 52°North Initiative mission. In order to encourage student participation, the 52°North Student Innovation Prize for Geoinformatics was initiated.

This year’s competition yielded two outstanding projects. In February, Daniel Nüst, diploma student at the Institute for Geoinformatics (ifgi) at the University of Münster, was awarded first prize for his project “sos4R – Accessing a Sensor Observation Service from R“. He was joined by Alexander McKeown and James McHugh from the Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organization (CSIRO) ICT Centre in Tasmania, Australia, who also received first prize for their proposal “Developing an SOS Client for Use by the General Public”. Each first prize was endowed with 2000,- EUR, as well as the unique opportunity to work with 52°North academics on-site to develop prototypical implementation of their concepts.
