52°North Student Innovation Prize Competition 2012
“Smart innovations for a smarter world”
*** call closed ***
Innovation is a driving force for the development of our economy. It is based on new, creative ideas, on applicable and implementable concepts and on generating new technologies and applications. However, a novel idea becomes an innovation only if it meets societal demands and unfolds its use in practice. It must address a certain market niche, i.e. have market relevance, or help e.g. a particular organization to improve its business.
With this in mind, the 52°North Student Innovation Prize for Geoinformatics stimulates students and student entrepreneurs to generate and implement innovative ideas and concepts in the geospatial domain. The prize acknowledges and rewards creative and innovative minds while providing a take-off platform to market the award winning idea and to push the idea to market.
52°North invites students of geoinformatics, informatics, or related fields to enter the competition. This year’s focus is on innovation in the field of Geoinformatics related to:
• Web of things
• Crowd-sourced spatial information
• Linked open data
• Social media integration/application
• Augmented reality.
The proposal should outline the idea, emphasize its innovative quality and convincingly describe its feasibility, practical use and market relevance.
The prize is endowed with 5000,- EUR for the purpose of stimulating market availability. The winner – chosen by an international jury – also receives presentation opportunities at a major Geo-IT Conference and coaching by the wide-ranging 52°North network of research labs and private industries, e.g. to support the actual implementation, to adjust the market focus or to increase the visibility. If related software implementations are to be published under an open source licence, 52°North would be happy to provide its platform for further dissemination. The winner retains all intellectual property rights.
Applications must be submitted, no later than August 31, 2012 November 15, 2012, via email to
Ms. Ann Hitchcock
The winning idea/concept will be announced at the beginning of 2013.
The innovation prize is sponsored by con terra GmbH, Esri Deutschland GmbH, the Institute for Geoinformatics at the University of Muenster, the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente and 52°North GmbH.These institutions work together under the banner of the 52°North Open Source Initiative to promote research and education in the field of Geoinformatics.
