International representatives meet to outline future path of integrating statistics with geospatial information. 52°North presents use case with WPS, R and shiny.

The UNECE and UN-GGIM jointly organized the recent Europe Workshop on "Integrating Geospatial and Statistical Standards 2017" The workshop, which took place at Statistics Sweden in Stockholm, focussed on current implementations and open challenges of integrating official statistics with geospatial data. Approximately 80 international representatives from the UN, EU, several national statistical, cartography and geodesy agencies and a few NGO's and companies met for 3 days to outline the future path of integrating statistics with geospatial information. 52°North's Dr. Ben Gräler presented a small use-case, in which official statistics on tourism have been joined with their corresponding geospatial administrative boundaries using a custom OGC Web Processing Service (WPS). The results have been visualized exemplarily with a R and Shiny based web map application and in Esri's ArcMap Desktop application.

Future work will be dedicated to the WPS implementation of statistical standards (e.g. SDMX) in close relation with the geospatial standards for an easy integration of the two data sources.
