52°North highlights at OGC TC Meeting

2013-01-24

52°North reports a number of highlights from the most recent OGC TC Meeting held at the Esri Campus in Redlands, CA, USA last week. In a nutshell: the current WPS 2.0 specification draft looks promising, the OWS-9 demonstration was a great success and the OWS-9 CCI Conflation with Provenance Engineering Report, as well as, the OWS-9 Aviation Architecture Engineering Report will become public OGC Engineering Reports.

At the Redlands OGC TC Meeting, 52°North covered a variety of tasks and topics. Matthias Müller (TU Dresden) presented the current status of the specification draft in the WPS 2.0 SWG. This was accompanied by discussions about the synchronous/asynchronous behavior of the WPS. The draft looks very promising and there are plans to finish the WPS 2.0 specification by the end of this year.

The public OWS-9 demonstration went very well. The thread architects acknowledged 52°North's and other participants' hard work during this testbed in five presentations. Furthermore, three videos demonstrated the scenarios, showing the testbed and the developed components in action. The relaxed atmosphere at the following exhibition and reception fostered casual discussions about the OWS-9 results, as well as other interesting topics.

In the well-attended Workflow DWG, Matthes Rieke (52°North/ifgi) presented the OWS-9 CCI Conflation with Provenance Engineering Report (OGC document 12-159), which was approved to become a public OGC Engineering Report. The Workflow DWG identified provenance as an emerging topic in the OGC, three presentations alone dealt with this topic. The 52°North Geoprocessing Community plans to continue development of the prototypical provenance capturing functionality implemented in the OWS-9 testbed. It should be integrated in to the WPS trunk in the future.

Matthes and Johannes Echterhoff collaboratively presented the service architecture developed in the OWS-9 testbed to the Aviation DWG. They covered the work on Aviation-specific Geometry Processing using the WPS and the newly developed Event Service features, thus reflecting the contents of the OWS-9 Aviation Architecture Engineering Report (OGC document 12-147). This was also was approved to become a public OGC Engineering Report.
